This is an artificial collection of letters, mostly political, assembled on the basis of the writers' associations with Virginia, in some instances tenuous. A few legal documents such as indentures and affidavits are included. Many documents are from Virginia members of Congress to presidents of the United States, the secretaries of the Navy and governors of Virginia, most often on matters of patronage; about sixty letters request appointments as midshipmen or as officers in the Marine Corps. Botts was born in Dumfries, Virginia to prominent lawyer Benjamin Gaines Botts (1776 - 1811) and his wife Jane Tyler Botts (1782 - 1811).
